Calvert Award for Undergraduate Research
Faculty Letter of Support Form

The judging committee is interested in your testament to the originality and quality of the original work of the student; your evaluation of the level of research and self-sufficiency as a researcher demonstrated by this student in pursuing the final product is particularly helpful in evaluating the quality of the research as it fits within the applicable discipline.

In addition to your statement of the academic/intellectual quality of the research project, will you please also address the following, relative to the submitted project:

  • - how well the research product met assignment expectations/directions
  • - sophistication, originality and/or unusual depth or breadth in the use of library collections, including, but not limited to, printed resources, databases, primary resources, and materials in all media
  • - exceptional ability to select, evaluate, and synthesize library resources and to marshal them in the creation of a project in any medium that shows originality and/or has the potential to lead to original research in the future; and,
  • - evidence of significant acquisition of information literacy skills, and the development of a habit of research and inquiry that shows the likelihood of persisting in the future.

If you are supporting a student's creative works submission, please also address:

- how the project addresses signficant themes within the discipline, including the use of discipline-specific craft and techniques

- how the creative work is presented in a manner appropriate and thought-provoking for the intended audience of the work

The primary focus of the Calvert Undergraduate Research Award is on the evidence of the student’s research strategy and process, the substance of which will be summarized in a reflective research essay produced by the student and, we hope, made available to you. Consideration of the product of the research, while significant, will be secondary. There are three levels of awards--one for 100-300 level courses, one for 400-level courses, and one for 400-level sequential courses--allowing the expectations for achievement to be judged in relationship to the applicant’s class year and the requirements of your discipline.
